Jamie Cullum supports Oatcake Day in Stoke-on-Trent with along with over 8,000 FaceBook members

Pancake Day is soon to be forgotten in north Staffordshire as the first ever Oatcake Day takes place on Sunday, 8 August 2010.

Organised by DJ Terry Bossons from Biddulph, he hopes it’ll become an annual day of recognition for The Potteries’ much-loved signature dish.

Celebrities such as Ricky Gervais and Jamie Cullum have shown their support, along with over 8,000 FaceBook members.

The main event will feature a rock concert at the Sugarmill in Hanley.

Local musical talent

The line-up includes a host of local talent with Sworn to Oath, Friends of Ken, Hello Big World and Round In Circles taking to the stage.

Terry, who’s been overwhelmed by the response for an Oatcake Day, will be hosting the proceedings.

The fun will then continue with an aftershow party to be held at Reflex in Hanley.

What exactly is an oatcake?

Oatcakes are made from a batter of oatmeal, flour, milk and water and are cooked on a griddle.

Imagine a pancake or French crepe and you’re not far off.

It’s usually served for breakfast with cheese, bacon, sausage or eggs.

Historically, they were popular with workers in Stoke-on-Trent’s booming pottery and mining industry and they’ve been a staple food around Staffordshire for hundreds of years.
