Wilton’s Dave Brubeck gets a 90th birthday salute next month on Turner Classic Movies.
His 90th birthday Dec. 6 will be marked chiefly with a new documentary on the jazz great.
“Dave Brubeck: In His Own Sweet Way” was executive produced by Clint Eastwood and directed by his collaborator Bruce Ricker, who has previously made films on Tony Bennett, Thelonious Monk and Johnny Mercer. Alec Baldwin narrates.
In addition to covering his biography it will include interviews with George Lucas, Sting, Bill Cosby, Jamie Cullum, David Benoit and Yo-Yo Ma as well as archival performances from jazz festivals. A new interview with Dave and Iola Brubeck will be included, as will Dave Brubeck and Walter Cronkite.
The 5 p.m. premiere of the documentary will be part of a night on TCM that will also include the 1962 “All Night Long,” which features a Brubeck performance, as well as the jazz films “Blues in the Night,” “Paris Blues,” “Young Man with a Horn” and “The Strip.”
Brubeck’s birthday is also being celebrated by the new CDs, “Dave Brubeck: Legacy of a Legend,” and “The Definitive Brubeck,” both out in stores today.
