Interview with Jamie in GQ Magazine

Interview by GQ.com – http://www.gq-magazine.co.uk/

The last time GQ.com saw Britain’s most successful jazz act he was backstage at a sold-out gig by French singer Camile, battering out a rhythm on a brick wall. Jamie Cullum has always been far more avant-garde than his radio-friendly personna would suggest – which is why everyone from Pharrell Williams to Clint Eastwood rates him so highly. A long-time GQ favourite, he is now in the process of recording his sixth studio album and raising his first child with model/author/gourmand Sophie Dahl. But sitting in a deserted Kensal Green pub, he’s the one asking the questions, at least at first: “Do you have an incredible code that you put into Mr Porter that means you can get a million pounds off each purchase?” (Sadly, we do not.) Here Cullum discusses meeting Sherlock, Winehouse karaoke and the most disgusting fanmail he’s ever received…

GQ.com: Which lyric are you most proud of writing?
Jamie Cullum: A recent one I’ve just written which seems to work really well in the song: “You can’t always explain the behaviour/Of another forgotten ex-raver”. It’s a song about friends you have that still think it’s 2001 and haven’t quite moved on in the same way everyone else has. They’re always demanding, “Why can’t you come to this warehouse tonight?”

Hiya Jamie, what are you going to teach us to play on the piano?

I think we’ll start with a C and a C Minor chord. By moving up and down the keys you can make a happy, then a sad song.

My perfect weekend: Jamie Cullum

Interview by Anna Tyzack

Since my daughter Lyra was born in March, my wife, Sophie [Dahl], and I have been spending Friday nights at home in Kensal Rise. But traditionally a trip to Cargo on Shoreditch High Street is an ideal start to the weekend for me. It’s a great place to experience the slightly left-field kind of music I’m into. I’ve seen so many good musicians there – most recently an American singer called Jose James, who was just incredible. You don’t have to know who is playing before you go to Cargo; it’s like a really good record label — whatever they put on there is going to be good. I’ll go along with Sophie, my good friend Duncan and a couple of my band members who tend to like the same music as me. Afterwards there’s always a trip to Plastic People, a nightclub just around the corner — the best club in the world, in my opinion. Continue reading here….

“The jazz musician on hanging out with Amy Winehouse and waking up with Sophie Dahl”

Why would pint-sized, piano-twanging jazz sensation Jamie Cullum get involved in another talent-spotting contest after the chastening experience of being a judge on last year’s short-lived Sky1 reality show Must Be the Music? And not just any old talent show – but one that’s a marketing exercise for a pizza chain.

With five million record sales worldwide, heaps of critical acclaim, a supermodel wife and a hugely popular Radio 2 show, he can’t be doing it for the money?

“I got involved because this particular venue, and also all the little restaurants I’ve played up and down the country, have given me a great deal,” replies the Essex-born, Wiltshire-raised singer/songwriter.
