As well-known for the kinetic mania of his concerts as he is for the playful rasp in his voice, slumming jazzbo Jamie Cullum’s new “The Pursuit” internalizes that restless edge, ducking from big-band swing to semi-gloss pop to piano balladry to house music. “Love Ain’t Gonna Let You Down” is the kind of contemporary pop that could be coming from John Mayer or Jason Mraz, except that it is more harmonically lush and uses both Cullum’s piano and a horn section to layer the simple melody in the texture of another era. Jazzers won’t suddenly get the point of Cullum through this, but a lot more pop fans might.
