CD Review: Jamie Cullum – The Pursuit

I loved Twentysomething and was convinced that here is a new, cool, fantastic young jazz-musician for my age. With big talents discovered young, these musicians are often pressured to keep to the top and this leads to all kinds of compromises. However, you get the sense that Jamie Cullum is cementing who he really is with The Pursuit. This is without a doubt his best album to date with a good selection of titles.

The long-awaited new Verve album features nine originals and five cover songs (US release). The English singer-songwriter kicks things off with an excellent opening – the Frank Wess-arranged version of Just One of Those Things. It sounds like the most traditional uptempo jazz cover Cullum has ever done.
